CROWDFUNDING

Spread the love

Crowdfunding is the practice of raising small amounts of money from a large number of people, primarily via the internet, to fund projects, businesses, or charitable causes. It acts as an alternative to traditional finance, allowing creators to bypass intermediaries and engage directly with backers, often using platforms like GoFundMe, Kickstarter, or Indiegogo.

Key Aspects of Crowdfunding:

  • How it Works: Creators launch campaigns on websites with a specific funding goal and timeframe (typically 30–45 days), promoting their ideas to attract contributors.
  • Types of Crowdfunding:
    • Donation-based: Individuals donate without expecting a return, commonly for charity or personal causes.
    • Reward-based: Backers receive a non-monetary reward, such as the product being funded or special recognition (common on Kickstarter).
    • Equity-based: Investors receive a small stake in the company, which is considered a high-risk investment.
  • Costs & Fees: While some platforms are free, others charge fees. For example, GoFundMe offers zero platform fees (but 2.9% +  payment fee), while Kickstarter and Indiegogo often charge 5% platform fees.
  • Success Factors: Successful campaigns require, at minimum, a compelling campaign page, a clear marketing plan, and active promotion to gain traction and potential virality
